What is Global Education?

According to OECD:

"Global Competence is a multi-dimensional construct that requires a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values successfully applied to global issues or intercultural situations. Global issues refer to those that affect all people, and have deep implications for current and future generations. Intercultural situations refer to face-to-face, virtual or mediated encounters with people who are perceived to be from a different cultural background."

The Asia Society defines the Four Dimensions of Global Competence:

  • Examining Local, Global, and Intercultural Issues

  • Understanding and Appreciating the Perspectives and Worldviews of Others

  • Engaging in Open, Appropriate and Effective Interactions Across Cultures

  • Taking Action Toward Collective and Sustainable Development

Nationalism is a political buzz word. Yes, it is great to have devotion to our own nation, but we need to have social empathy beyond borders and to be citizens of the world if we want our own country to be successful.

The problems of that we face in the US are faced in countries across the world. By working with others collectively, we can solve issues that we could not solve alone.

We must prepare our students to be successful in a global environment.
